One of the rooms at the Sylvester Broome Empowerment Center, filled wall to wall with toys for the children of Flint

On December 23, Solutions Institute partnered with Little Miss Flint and Pack Your Back to host our very first Stuff Your Stocking event in Flint, Michigan. As part of our ongoing effort to provide support to the city which is still enduring a deadly water crisis, we came together with our partner organizations to provide over $25,000 in toys and school supplies.

Hosted at the Sylvester Broome Empowerment Center, the event was a lively and festive mix of crafts, activities, and photo opportunities with Santa Clause. While it’s important that we maintain a strategy to understand and solve Flint’s most pressing issues, the morale of the community is also a critical factor to consider. Everyone needs a day to enjoy time with their family and community, a day to eat and dance and have fun. Nothing made this more apparent than watching the awe-stricken faces of over 500 beautiful Flint children as they walked into our toy room.

Each child walked away with 3 toys of their choice, a stocking filled with school supplies, and their own backpack. As the event drew nearer, Mari Copeny, known to the public as Little Miss Flint, utilized her social media followers to garner national attention. Her extensive reach created a stir, catching the eye of major celebrities like Mark Ruffalo. Through our rigorous promotion, Stuff Your Stocking was funded entirely by public donations. All in all, the event was a resounding success and we can’t wait to return to Flint to continue providing aid to the community.
